Congressman Mike Doyle joins panel to discuss Darfur Genocide: hosted by Global Solutions Pittsburgh and Pitt’s Global Studies Program and STAND Chapter on January 25, 2007

Global Solutions Education Fund Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh's Global Studies Certificate Program and the Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND) chapter of the University of Pittsburgh are pleased to host a panel with Congressman Mike Doyle as well as Dr. Michael Goodhart and Dr. Macrina Lelei of the University of Pittsburgh on January 25, 2007 at 6 pm in the William Pitt Union Ballroom. They will be discussing the genocide currently taking place in Darfur and the prospects for international intervention.

Violence and destruction have plagued the Darfur region of Sudan since 2003.  The world has looked on as 400,000 Darfurians have been brutally murdered and 2,500,000 Africans in the region have been forced to flee their homes.  The atrocities have not gone unnoticed.  In 2003 President Bush designated the Sudanese conflict as genocide, yet no concrete action has occurred as a result of such a designation.  Refugee camps in Chad are overflowing and the humanitarian situation is continuing to deteriorate.

The panel will be a culmination of a weeklong letter writing campaign by Pitt’s STAND chapter to push for senate action regarding Darfur.  Current US legislation does not provide adequate funding for possible UN peacekeeping efforts.  Ensuring that the UN has the proper resources for a mission in Sudan is essential to promoting peace in the region.  With the passage of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1706, it is now time for the Sudanese government to allow UN troops on the ground.  Our representatives can apply the needed pressure to the Sudanese Government.  It is hoped through this letter campaign and others like it, our representatives will be moved to act.
